 On recording ..

The challenges of recording a small band

Where is the recording equipment?

Bear Fax does not have a dedicated resource, neither friends nor family child labor for exploitation,  so hands-free recording equipment is needed. (yes, we do have friends ..really)

Zoom H6  field track recorder is my audio capture and storage device. Made for recording a small performance, it grabs high quality results just from the default Mike's, and takes up to 4 more.

The field Mike's (the ones that stick out on top) capture the band sound backstage, as well as audio from addition Mikes / feed to get the vocals. 6 separate tracks get written to SD card, allowing re-mix later.  This my backup.

A rough mix is sent to my video recorder (cellphone) via a digitizer (Joyo Momix )/USB which provides me great quality audio to work with.

I use Microsoft ClipChamp (https://clipchamp.com/en/windows-video-editor/) and start wading thru a set worth of video  (7 - 8 Gig ), listening  to good pieces to split off into smaller songs. Old time editing.

Next each smaller song's ClipChamp-ed again, this time tighting the starts, stops, fades and  adjusting audio so it sound decent on a phone and PC with headphones. This the extent of the mastering I do currently.

After mustering up some creative writing, it's ready for publication.
